Orchid Flowers Care Tips
Orchids are exquisite flowers that are known to have an amazing effect on people, usually in the holiday season you will see more orchids on the streets, they are out on florists windows so shoppers can admire this flower and in some cases give them as holiday gifts to their friends and family.

In the past orchids were not to be found on the western markets and were abundant only in their natural habitats, which are much more tropical and humid, it is natural that today we enjoy more orchids then ever because of the modernized efficiency of the flower industry. Orchids are a thing of beauty, one of the most impressive flowers you can have at home is an orchid.

Horticulturists are not the only people in the world who have the passion to study and love flowers. There are those who do this as a hobby and the individual has the choice if working with roses or orchids.

There are more than 25,000 species of orchids that have been recorded. This doesn?t take into account the hybrid versions being developed by scientists. The interesting thing about these plants is that these don?t have to be always planted into the ground unlike other flowers.

Orchids can be grown either indoor or outdoor. Like other plants, it needs two basic things namely water and light. The hobbyists can use artificial light by using a lamp but the best source is still the natural kind that comes from the sun.

This process as everyone knows is called photosynthesis. The person should just be careful because some of the species are sensitive when there is too much light that can even kill the orchid.

Research shows that many people want to garden these varieties in the outdoors. This is because of the vast space in the backyard or in the front porch.

The most important thing that the person should be familiar with are the three types of species that are generally being grown. Each of these have different needs so the person needs to understand how these are able to bloom and survive given the environment.

The first type of orchid is called the Epiphytes. The individual should place this plant on a high shelf or stand so that it can live and grow near to its natural habitat since this species comes from trees.

Orchids are beautiful delicate and consist of a huge variety of different orchids, there is a lot to learn about these mysterious flowers, read about Orchid Care Tips at Daniel Roshard Orchids site http://orchid.zupatips.com

Why You Should Consider Artificial Flowers
When thinking of flowers, we automatically think of fresh-cut flowers for that decoration for the table, but artificial flowers have their place in any home. The reasons are as vast as the kinds of flowers you can purchase. Nothing is left without being imitated by the artificial flower and they certainly do have their place in our world.

The wide variety of artificial plants and flowers on the market today is unbelievable and they are used for many different reasons. A person that loves flowers but just doesn't have the time to care for them can purchase a beautiful plant and place it in a room to make the room look cozier. They can walk away and not even think about caring for the flower, but just enjoy the pleasure that it adds to the room's decor. Today's artificial plants and flowers are so realistic that in some cases it is very difficult to tell if they are real or not.

This type of flower is also widely used in cemeteries. They are ideal for leaving at a grave side and giving at a funeral. They are very long lasting, whether they are inside or out and are used for this purpose all over the world. They are also used to decorate churches for special occasions such as weddings, Easter, or just as an ornament to brighten up the church. Again they can be used worry free of care except to dust them occasionally.

Some people use them in spray arrangements, which are arrangements of flowers that you can hang on a wall. You can also purchase them from a florist, set in a beautiful container. Most people would prefer artificial to real flowers for the simple fact that they last a lot longer and that they are care free. This makes it the ideal gift to give someone that is older or someone that is an invalid. They can enjoy the beauty of these flowers and not worry about them. You can even use these flowers to decorate any part of your lawn. If you have a waterfall in your back yard what would look better than a care free palm tree sitting next to it. There is no end to the ideas you can have for artificial plants and flowers.
Silk Flowers For Home Decoration
Though flowers are a beauty to behold and are a good thing for decoration on your home it is still sometimes too tedious to maintain. Why should you stick to natural flowers which dries out and even gives a bad odor to your house when it rots out? So why don?t we try silk flowers for home decorations.

Silk flowers are a good thing for those people that don?t have a green thumb and just do not have the time to tend them. Artificial decorations through time have evolved from those lousy looking plastics to silk materials that are really close to being natural looking.

These days it is really hard to tell which flowers are true and which are artificially made.

Silk flowers are just as good as natural flowers even way better, they can be cut to your own predefined length and their petals can even be arranged the way you like them. They also come in different shades and colors that you can order all through out the years, unlike the natural flowers which only come out seasonal.

You can also do different arrangements for silk flowers, like for example you can just tie a set of silk flowers and just set it out on a table not needing a pot or even a bowl of water to make it last longer.

The good thing about silk flowers for home decoration is the elasticity of styles that you can make from them. Since their stems are made up of wired plastic you can just twist and turn them the way you want it to be. Plus the factor of not needing any water supply gives it an additional design flexibility of which bowl to use as their base or sometimes it can even be designed without using a bowl.

When buying your silk flowers pay attention to some good details like the number of petals, the fullness of the bulb, the number of leaves, the length of stem and other things that you want to take note of.

You can even find online stores that sell this kind of flowers and just have them shipped at your doorstep for an easy shopping method, you can just describe the kind of flower that you like and the stores will have them delivered to you the way you like it.

Some online stores have a mounted tool on their websites for designing flower arrangements, so you can look for this kind of websites for a much more comfortable designing experience.

When shopping for silk flowers do not forget to also buy some greens with them. You don?t want to have your flower look so artificial. So buy some silk stems with a good set of leaves for an additional flair in your flower arrangements.
Christmas Flowers
What better way to adorn a special day than with the colors and fragrance of the beautiful flowers that add a festive look and feel to any occasion. There are florists who customize flower arrangements to suit all occasion. There are a variety of flowers that are associated with Christmas. Among many, the Mexican Poinsettia popularly used for Christmas decorations add charm to the festive occasion. It is the native flower of Mexico and is known by several names like ?Flower of the Holy Night?, ?Flame Leaf?, ?Christmas flower?, ?Lobster flower?. These flowers look exquisite in their bright red hue yet discovering them in colors like white and pink is also not a rare sight. These star-shaped bracts are believed to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem. It has been named honoring the former US ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel R. Poinsett of South Carolina who introduced the flower to the United States when he returned home in 1835 from his ambassadorship. History has it that Dr. Poinsett had such strong fondness for the flower that he dedicated the last years of his life to making the ?poinsettia?, a universal symbol for Christmas.

Other common Christmas flowers include Christmas cactus with its green leaves and pink or red flowers , holly with green leaves and red berries, Christmas Rose,Christmas tree, Christmas garland, a tradition brought into America from Europe by the early settlers and of course the Mistletoe, symbolic of peace, goodwill and love. Some of these flowers have long legends associated with its origin as the Christmas flower. The legend of Poinsettia comes from Mexico. It is believed that two poverty stricken kids, Maria and Pablo who loved Christmas and looked forward to it would be miserable as they couldn?t afford to offer anything in the church to express their love and gratitude towards Baby Jesus. One Christmas Eve as these two kids set forth for the church service, they decided to pick some roadside weeds to gift it to Baby Jesus, during the dramatization of the manger scene. As they placed their offering around the manger, the green leaves miraculously turned into bright red petals and in no time the manger was surrounded by star-shaped flowers, now commonly known as the Poinsettia.

Christmas rose also hailed as the Snow or Winter Rose, is traditionally regarded as the true Christmas flower. This flower is linked with the story of the birth of the savior and how a little shepherdess named Madelon, desirous of offering a gift to welcome the new born King, was blessed by an angel with a beautiful white flower tipped with pink, later named as the Christmas Rose. The conceptualization of the Christmas tree as an essential part of Christmas, has its root in medieval Germany where there was a tradition of decorating an evergreen with apples to symbolize the ?Paradise tree?.Many years before the celebration of Christmas began, the Germans used evergreens to decorate their homes. They believed that these trees represented life and immortality and would protect their homes from evil during the coming year.

So it?s true that Christmas flowers with its legend and beauty blossoms to glorify in ?the name of the father, of the son, in the holy spirit Amen? and thereby redeem this pious occasion from being further commercialized.

Wedding Flowers ? Helpful Information on Choosing Your Flowers
When choosing flowers for your wedding it is important to take into account the theme of your wedding and the style and colour of your dress.

The most important flowers are the brides? bouquet and this should be the where you start in choosing the style and colour and what flowers you want. Styles vary from long and trailing to simple posies, hand ties or wired stems. Some brides may like to have a style that was similar to their mother or grandmothers or may choose a particular flower for sentimental reasons .Today there is a vast array of flowers available and even if a flower is out of season they can often be transported from abroad, but this however will increase the cost.

Collect pictures and ideas and have sample swatches of the bridal party?s dresses available for the florist to see .A florist should have portfolio of their work so that you can see for yourself what they can do. They should be able to advise you on choice of flowers, styles and weight of the bouquet and what is suitable for the bridesmaids. Some designs can be quite heavy to hold .Different bouquets suite different style of dresses and different sizes of people. Colour too is an important aspect and if the right colour is chosen it will compliment a dress.

Some brides like to keep their posies afterwards and this can sometimes influence the choice of flower as some preserve better than others .If this is not within your budget then you may wish to choose silk flowers or a combination of both .For example a bouquet that contains silk roses that you will be able to keep as a memento long after your wedding day but have fresh freesias for the perfume. Your florist should be able to suggest which to choose and also some one who can preserve flowers .These are then often arranged into a picture frame.

In Victorian times many flowers had different meanings associated with them, lilies were for purity, lily of the valley meant happiness, and roses were for love. Of this tradition only myrtle and orange blossom have really managed to survive. If a sprig of myrtle is placed in a bouquet it symbolizes a happy marriage as myrtle represented purity and fertility as it was sacred to Venus. Orange blossom was also used as an alternative to myrtle as it also represented happiness and loveliness.

Make sure the florist knows exactly your requirements. Traditionally flowers are placed at the entrance to the church /venue and the entrance to the reception. Some couples choose to have smaller arrangements around the church and on the pew ends whilst others may have the pew ends decorated with ribbons. At the reception arrangements can be place on all the guests tables with one larger one on the top table although not so large that they take up to much room and are so high that guests cannot see one another across the table! Couples often like to have a thank you posy for the mothers or for any one else who has helped them .Fresh flowers can also be used to decorate the cake.

Obviously cost is an important factor. However if on a tight budget it is often better to make sure the brides bouquet is the one of your choice and have just a few large arrangements elsewhere rather than trying to decorate everywhere. Less is more.

Check that the florists knows the venues, if not, they may wish to visit it beforehand to see where flowers can be placed and check with the church about the flower procedure. It may be they have there own containers that should be used or there may be flowers already in place from a previous service. One important thing to think about is where to keep the flowers once they have been delivered to your house. The flowers should be kept somewhere cool, shady and out of the way of inquisitive hands and pets. Cats will investigate and want to play with the foliage and dogs have been known in excitement to jump on a bouquet and flatten it!
The Best Way to Purchase Your Wedding Flowers
When you are choosing the flowers for your wedding you need to take some things into account. Choosing your flowers can be a very tedious task if you are not prepared. Below I have listed some tips to make choosing your wedding flowers a little easier.

Your asking yourself if you should choose live flowers or artificial flowers. You should first do some comparison shopping at your local florists. Live flowers can be more expensive at other times as artificial flowers usually will remain the same price year round. When you get a good idea of what each has to offer such as price, appeal and quality then figure out your budget. When you find the florist that has the flowers that fit your budget and you really like them then go with it.

Choosing the date of your wedding is critical when choosing the flowers for your wedding. The date of the wedding will determine the cost of your flowers. Such as if you have your wedding in certain seasons, holidays or near Valentine's day. So take a look at the prices around at your local florists and find the perfect date for your wedding.

Go to your local paint store and pick you up some paint cards that are similar to the colors that you are having in your wedding. This way you will have several shades and tints of your colors and you can use it as a quick reference when choosing flowers and other items.

Make sure you call and make an appointment with the florist. This will ensure that the florist will be able to focus on your needs without interruption.

Ask your florist any question you are not sure about? Make sure you have in your contract that you want to use the same flowers at the ceremony and reception. Make sure they will deliver the flowers from the ceremony to the reception. When having this in your contract you will save money because you will not have to buy double the flowers or rent them twice.

Ask your florist if you can bring a camera with you when meeting with them. If you are allowed to bring a camera you can take pictures of the different ideas, styles and you can carry these with you and ask others of their honest opinions.

Just remember what ever wedding flowers you choose remember it is you and your partners wedding day enjoy it.

Poinsettias - Fact and Fiction Surrounding the Christmas Flowers
Poinsettias are native to Mexico, where they grow wild, and were first introduced to the United States in 1825 by Joel Robert Poinsett, amateur botanist and first ambassador to Mexico. Poinsett brought some cuttings to his plantation in Greenwood, South Carolina. The rest is history. Today, National Poinsettia Day, Dec. 12, commemorates Poinsett and the plant he made famous on the anniversary of his death in 1851.

The legend of the poinsettia dates back to a Christmas Eve centuries ago, when a little girl named Pepita had no gift to present to the Christ child. On her way to the church she gathered up weeds along the road. Then, a miracle unfolded. As she approached the alter, the weeds bloomed into vibrant flowers -- Flores de Noche Buena or Flowers of the Holy Night.

The Aztecs called the poinsettia Cuetlaxochitl. They made a reddish purple dye from the bracts. In Chile and Peru, the poinsettia is known as the Crown of the Andes. Poinsettias have also been referred to as the Flame Leaf Flower. In nature, they're a perennial flowering shrub that can grow up to ten feet in height.

Today, poinsettias range in color from white to pink to traditional red, with shades of peach and yellow in between, with more than 100 varieties available. Newer varieties boast marbled, flecked, and even wrinkled bracts (the colored portion of the plant). They're grown in all fifty states, from tiny plantings, the vast majority of which originate from the Paul Ecke Ranch in California.

Many mistakenly believe poinsettias are poisonous. But, researchers at Ohio State University have proved the poinsettia to be non-toxic to both humans and pets. In fact, out of 22,793 reported poinsettia exposures studied by Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, there was no toxicity significance found. Even pet lovers need not ban the poinsettia from their homes. Keeping the plant out of reach of pets is a good idea, however, to avoid stomach upset from the fibrous tissues, especially among feline friends. Like most decorative blooming plants, the poinsettia is not meant to be eaten and can certainly cause discomfort if ingested.

Poinsettias range in price from under $10 to over $100, based on size, variety, shape, quality, and decorative trim. When selecting poinsettias, look for plants with thoroughly colored and expanded bracts, plentiful green foliage, strong stems, and no signs of wilting. Care and handling is easy. Poinsettias like indirect sunlight, room temperatures, and light to moderate soil moisture. Over watering and excessive temperatures are the most common causes of any problems. Simply avoid cold drafts, excessive heat, or soggy soil.

With a little care, poinsettias last through Christmas and beyond, making them a terrific value, as well as a popular gift and favorite holiday decoration.

Choosing Anniversary Flowers
When we think of an anniversary flower, the first thing that comes to mind is the rose. Unless the one you love has a preference for their own special flower, the rose is traditionally the sign of love. But did you know that for each shade of the rose there is a different meaning? The red rose is given at Valentines Day to declare to someone that you have fallen in love with them and if given to friends it certainly would convey the wrong message. A purple, coral or orange rose is known as the Valentine rose. There are also many kinds of flowers for the anniversary besides the rose, each of them beautiful in their own way. For every year of an anniversary there is a flower that should be given.

For the first year of an anniversary in a business a pansy should be given, the second year should be Cosmos, the third year should be Fushias, the fourth year the beautiful Geranium, and the fifth year the delegate Daisy. By the tenth year you have to shop for the streamline Daffodil and the beautiful rose doesn't come into play until the fifteenth year anniversary. The 20th year brings the Day Lily, the 25th is the slender Iris and the 30th is the petite sweet pea. The 40th is the bold Nasturtium and the 50th is the Violet

Regardless of the flower that should be given on an anniversary, the rose has to be the most popular. Nothing will please a woman as the declaration of your love when it is shown with roses. Of course, there are many other kind of anniversaries, so we have to then keep in mind which flowers should be given to whom. For example, if your firm is having an anniversary then you better look up a flower list. Roses would not be the flowers to send, but if you're thinking of a wedding anniversary with your loved one, then there is nothing that compares to a dozen red roses.

How to Grow Cauliflowers!
Growing Cauliflowers

Cauliflowers originated in southern Europe. They are not the easiest vegetable to grow which puts many off the idea of even attempting to try this wonderful tasty crop. The soil must be healthy; it demands that the soil is sweet, with a pH range of 6.5 - 7.5, deeply dug with a very high fertility level. Anything that slows down the growth, such as insects, lack of water, excessive heat or cold, may prevent the development of the head.

Soil Preparation

Sandy loam is preferable with an enrichment of well-rotted manure and compost at a rate of one bucketful to the sq. yd. It is an advantage if cauliflowers follow a well-manured crop like potatoes or peas; doing this the ground will be firmer and in good condition. If the soil is not already chalky or limy after the initial soil preparation, apply carbonate of lime as a top dressing at the rate of 5 oz. (150g) to the sq. yd.

About ten days before planting, apply a fertilizer such as fish manure, bone meal at the rate of 3 oz. (90g) to the sq. yd. You may also add some wood ash or sulphate of potash at 1 oz. (30g) to the sq. yd.

Sowing

Make the first sowing in January, keeping them on staging in a greenhouse at a temperature of 50 deg. F. (10 deg C.). When the seedlings come through, prick out and replant into pots containing similar soil. At the beginning of March put the pots out into a frame to harden the plants off; let them get acclimatised to the outside atmosphere until the end of March, then transplant them into the bed where they are to mature. Make the second sowing in late April thinly into moist, firm soil, in frames, which should be as similar to John Innes compost as possible. Keep the frame closed until germination takes place then allow a little ventilation on mild days. When the seedlings come through, prick out and replant into pots containing similar soil; these will be ready to plant out in June.

The third sowing is made in May, in the seedbed in a sunny, sheltered position. Make drills about ? in. (12mm) deep and sow the seeds thinly. After covering the seeds make sure that the soil is firmed over with the head of a rake. It is important to remember that whenever cauliflowers are transplanted they must be planted shallowly, if the base of the leaves are buried it will deform the plant and they will not develop the centres.

Planting

During the growing period many old gardeners would give their cauliflowers a dressing of soot, but in this modern era of gas, electric, and for that matter solar powered heating, it is unlikely that this substance is available to the majority of today's gardeners. Instead, dried blood at a rate of 2 oz. (60g) to the sq. yd. can be given.

Harvesting

Always cut the cauliflowers early in the morning whilst the curds are moist with dew. If a number of curds appear to be ready at the same time and they are not all required at once, break the midribs of two or three of the centre leaves on each plant that is not needed so that they cover the curd like an umbrella and protect it for a few days until they are required. The cauliflower will keep however for about three weeks if it is pulled up, including roots, and hung upside down in a dry shed.

Mallow Wild Flowers Unmatched Beauty
There are many varieties of Mallow wild flowers. Mallow Rose is the most common one. Others varieties include Marsh Mallow, Desert Mallow.

Mallow rose or Swamp Rose- mallow grows well in saline conditions, riversides, brackish marshes and lake shores. Its botanical name is Hibiscus Moscheutos. It is found from Massachusetts to the Gulf of Mexico. Its growth can also extend till Louisiana in the west. It starts flowering in the month of August and flowers till September. The plant is known for its clear, big rose pink colored flowers though white flowers with red center can also be found. The flowers can be four to seven inches in width. The plant is stout, with a perennial root and can be up to seven feet in length. The size of their leaves can be anywhere in between three and seven inches. The leaves are egg shaped and tapered. On their underside, there's a white down which is dense.

These magnificent flowers make the travelers spellbound with their beauty. They grow in marshes. It grows well in moist and well-enriched soil. They can easily grow at home though they require a lot of salt and water for their growth. The garden receives average water from showers etc but these flowers grow rapidly in such conditions also. To have them at home, one can dig up some roots and transport these plants to their home. However before digging it up one must not forget to wear rubber boots as the place where they grow is quite slippery. Spade provides some support.

Its decorative splendor is unmatched among the bushes and only hollyhock which is one of its cousins can match it. Rose mallow's beauty is unparallel it can only be eclipsed by the Rose of China or Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis. This flower has a scarlet colored corolla which stains black. Rose of China is used for different purposes in different countries. Married Chinese women used this flower for discoloring their teeth while people used it for shoe polish in the West Indies.

Marsh Mallow whose botanical name is Althaea officinalis produces small pink colored flowers. Wymote is it's another name. The flowers measure one and a half inches in length. The flower can be found in the salty marshes that extend from Massachusetts coast to New York. It is a thick plant which can be up to four feet in height. The plant grows in swamps and it is very important for it to have open pores. Its pores clog due to the moisture which arises from its wet retreats; to prevent this, the plant is covered with velvety down. This leafy plant has thick roots which have medicinal value.

There's another variety known as the Desert Mallow. It grows in hot places like Southern New Mexico, Arizona and in some regions of Texas. The plant has peach colored flowers and these small flowers thrive well in the hot conditions!

Artificial Flowers - From Hell
My neighbor is totally devoid of any artistic sense. The materials he chooses for his yard decoration are totally baffling. Even though his yard is neat and well maintained, the decorations he placed there will appall anyone. He fancies using artificial flowers in his decorations but the result of his labor always looked like a product of some demented scientific experiment. You would think that he would be an excellent horror set designer for Hollywood.

Year after year I have to suffer from the awful designs that he sets up in his yard. He is fond of making sprawling flower beds out of artificial flowers. The problem is, he doesn?t bother to make them look as though they?re genuine. As a result the flower blooms he makes every spring are out of control and the greenery in his yard is always much too green.

The colors he picks for his artificial flower designs are those that are never found in nature like neon green, and fluorescent pink, which gives you the feeling that you?re dreaming every time you happen to gaze out into his yard. His aesthetic preference makes you wonder if he is color blind, or is suffering from some rare type of eye disease. He loves artificial stuff so much that I wouldn?t be surprised if he replaces his lawn with Astroturf.

I used to be fond of using artificial flowers myself, but after seeing my neighbor?s yard I never touched them again. He even goes further by loading countless planters full with brightly colored plastic blooms. This year he has out done himself by placing window boxes outside of his shed and loading them up with hideous, artificial flowers.

He hung curtains in the windows of his shed making you wonder if he also has a tiny plastic family behind the glass window, living happily in their plastic artificial world complete with artificial flowers and turf. If ever that yard burn and all those repulsive decorations goes up in flames, the smell of plastic would saturate the atmosphere for a decade and would greatly increase the world?s global warming woes.

Christmas Flowers and Decorations - What to Look for in Flowers, Wreaths and Garlands This Season
Festive flowers, wreaths and garlands can add a touch of holiday warmth to any home or business. They're a wonderful way to welcome friends and family. And, with the right special touches, they can transform a room into something really special. What's hot and what's not? You don't have to be a fashion expert. Consult your florist, check out your favorite decorating magazines, and use your common sense. Here's what you should know:

Ordinary is Out

Thinking about a plain pine wreath or skimpy garland with some little red bows? Think again. Plain is definitely taboo. "This year, floral fashion is all about rich textures, new accent colors, and lots of detail," says Don Phillip of Phillip's Flowers in Chicago. "It's about stretching the boundaries of traditional themes by layering on fresh new perspectives and a touch of personal flair. It's about luxury, ornamentation, and opulence. It's about more, not less." So, let yourself go. You can turn "ordinary" into "extraordinary" with the right materials, colors, and accessories.

Textures are In

Look for a variety of rich textures and natural elements in your holiday decorations, like mixed West Coast evergreens, pine cones of all shapes and sizes, berry sprays, flowers, fruit, branches and other botanicals. Today's choices are almost endless. Don't be surprised by hydrangeas, peonies, and tulips in this year's cutting edge floral designs, as well as poinsettias and roses. "The more varied the textures, the better," says Phillip, "to create a natural sense of depth and visual interest." So, look for more than just the "plain old, same old." Look for textures upon textures.

Color Palettes are Expanding

While traditional red is still the most popular holiday color, a variety of newer fashion colors are being welcomed as accents, and other color palettes are gaining ground, too. You'll see darker reds, crimsons, burgundy, and Bordeaux, as well as combinations of reds and wines. You'll also see greens of almost every shade, from celadon to sage to basil. Browns and black are back as accents. Cinnamon, copper, platinum, and gold are strong, too. Rich reds with fashion color accents will give a fresh new look to this year's holiday decorations. Watch for non-traditional combinations, as well, such as vivid jewel tones, turquoise and copper, reds and black, or gold and platinum combined. "Almost anything goes, when it's tasteful, stylish, and builds on a theme," says Phillip.

According to FTD Design Instructor Tina Stoecker, AIFD, "Another trend we may start to see from Europe this year is black trees highlighted with fashion colors like teals, vibrant blues, and coppers. It's definitely unusual but can really be striking." On the other end of the spectrum, the "Lodge Look" is being reinvented. "It's outdoorsy elegance with very natural looking trees tastefully trimmed with miniature trout, antlers, birds, bears, and the like," says Stoecker. "Baroque themes combining golds, ivories, birds, and pheasant feathers will also be in vogue," she explains. Blues and creams are back, too. Look for seashells combined with blues, ivories, and aqua or metallics accented with pearl and warm blues.

Glitz, Gilding, and Sparkles, Oh My!

Natural looks will always be appropriate at Christmas, but there's definitely a trend toward glitz, gilding, sparkles, and frosting of all kinds. So, look for gilded blossoms, frosted branches, sparkling ornaments, and much more. All that glitters definitely belongs in this year's fashion-forward holiday designs, and there are plenty of choices for everyone's taste and budget.

Setting the Table with Style

When it's time to gather around the table, the focal point should definitely be fresh flowers. But, just like other holiday decorations this season, the textures, colors, and accents will be what makes your Christmas centerpiece really shine. So, don't settle for ordinary. Look for something that reflects your style. And, remember, more is more, this season. Whether velvety red roses, snow-white lilies, or a profusion of mixed fresh blooms, a tasteful design of beautiful flowers with the right textures and accents makes everyone around it feel special and says something very special about you, too.

Make It Beautiful and Make It Your Own

The trend in home decorating and home improvements is carrying over into Christmas flowers and holiday decorations. People are spending more time with family and friends in their own homes. Naturally, they want to decorate for the holidays accordingly. Gone are the days of a single poinsettia. You'll find poinsettias of various sizes and colors in groupings or displayed throughout multiple rooms. There's also a clear trend toward multiple Christmas trees -- such as a whimsical tree in the family room or perhaps a tabletop tree with a different theme in each child's bedroom, as well as a larger, more formal tree in the living room. Ornaments will be everywhere -- on trees, clustered in glass bowls, in centerpieces, and spilling over onto garlands and wreaths, making everything more personal and meaningful.

After all, it's your home and your holiday. So, you should make it beautiful and make it your own. Start with rich textures, add some fresh accent colors, and remember lots of ornaments, accents, or glitz. They're the perfect combination this holiday season for all your Christmas flowers, garlands, wreaths, and decorations to help you celebrate the season with real style.

Caring for Fresh Flowers
Flowers, fluttering and fascinating, they hold the power to stop tears. They hold the power to make a child smile. They even hold the power to please God! They open up their arms for everyone, from the smallest bees to the humming birds to humans with equal alacrity. They are ever ready, to be packaged for a date, to melt the heart of the mad wifey, to be offered to the deities. Such is their destiny.

Yet, not many understand flowers, particularly when it comes to caring for them. Real care begins from the time when seeds are sowed. Its better to get a personal gardener if you don't have adequate knowledge about flowers and seasons till you learn fully about them. Also, it is an art to take care of your fresh flowers in the flower vase, so they live longer.

Most flowers live for about 5-7 days, depending upon the arrangement and the care they receive. You must ensure that the vase is filled with water and flower victuals supplied by your florist. These are developed to keep the flowers at their vibrant best. However one important tip to be kept in mind is the mixing of the flower food with water, which is specified in the flower food packets.

This, if not adhered to properly, may not give effective results. Care must be taken not to dip the flower stems in hazy and unclear solutions either. If that happens you have to cut the stem, with a sharp knife or clipper ensuring that the stem is not crushed, by about one or two inches diagonally, and put the flowers back into the fresh, clear solutions. Most importantly, avoid putting flowers in direct sunlight, over television sets or radiators or any other heat producing objects which will rob the flowers off its moisture. Also avoid keeping them directly under air condition ducts.

Drying Fresh Flowers
Flowers are a symbol of beauty and exude freshness all around. However, fresh flowers have a short shelf life. Drying flowers using the right technique can result in preserving them as close to their original form, flexibility, color and texture. There are many methods that are used to dry flowers.

Pressing is the most popular form of drying fresh flowers. Flowers are neatly straightened and kept between sheets of paper and weighted. This ensures that the pigments are not lost and the color is retained. Special devices called plant presses give excellent results. This method should be adopted when the flowers are fresh, so that they remain so in the dried form. Violets, pansies, larkspur and ferns preserve well when pressed in this manner. These dried flowers can be arranged in framed displays.

Air-drying, also known as "hang and dry" method, is the oldest and simplest method for preserving flowers. The flowers are collected, tied and then hung upside down in a warm, dry place. Since the flowers are dried in air, the method is referred to as "air-drying." The darkness helps retain the color of the flowers. Flowers such as baby's breath, cattail, celosia, dock, goldenrod, heather and pussy willow preserve well when stored this way. Blue and yellow flowers retain their color whereas pink flowers fade.

Flowers are also dried using desiccants. Embedding the flowers in a granular, desiccating material is considered the best all around method to dry flowers. The flowers are covered with the desiccant so that their form will be maintained.

Water drying is also used to preserve fresh flowers. Here, stems of the flowers are initially placed in a couple of inches of water, the water is allowed to evaporate and be taken up by the cut flowers. The container and flowers should be in a dry, warm and dark location. Hydrangeas, yarrow, bells-of-Ireland and celosia dry well with this method.

Most people pursue drying and preserving flowers as a hobby. Even with the increased popularity of synthetic flowers, many people still prefer the real flowers preserved in a lifelike manner.
